Artist Statement

Meg Casey’s art navigates the profound intersections of personal trauma and artistic expression, transforming deeply private experiences into evocative, multidisciplinary works. As a multidisciplinary artist, Casey creates immersive environments that challenge and engage her audience on both an emotional and sensory level.

Casey’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in her own life experiences, particularly her struggles with mental health. These personal battles drive her to explore themes of discomfort, unrest, and the chaotic nature of the human psyche. Through her art, she seeks to foster a dialogue around mental health, creating spaces for reflection, understanding, and healing.

Her current body of work centers on the theme of domestic violence, driven by a personal mission to break the cycles of abuse and offer solace to those who feel isolated in their despair. Casey’s work aims to ensure that no one feels alone in their hidden struggles, fostering a sense of solidarity, understanding, and empathy among viewers.

Casey’s performances often employ a ‘jellyfish state’ of being that symbolises resilience and the natural ebb and flow of life. This concept allows her to connect with her audience on a profound level, bringing it to life through instinctive thoughts and movements in her immersive installations, performances, and sculptures.

Using various media, including performance, sculpture, and film, Casey highlights the beauty found in discord and the strength in vulnerability. Her art challenges viewers to confront and embrace the uneasy truths that are often ignored, fostering a deeper connection, understanding, and empathy among them.

Ultimately, Meg Casey’s art serves as a conduit for personal reflection and collective empathy. Her work fosters a supportive community that recognizes the power of vulnerability and the importance of mental health. By inviting viewers to embark on a shared journey toward healing and hope, Casey continually redefines the boundaries of contemporary art, creating an immersive emotional odyssey.

Review

"Meg Casey’s latest exhibition was a raw and powerful exploration of chaos as a manifestation of trauma, perfectly matched by the rough, industrial warehouse setting. The standout piece was her sculpture, a haunting embodiment of turmoil that lingered in my mind long after the night ended. Her performance, intense and visceral, felt like a physical struggle with the very themes she was exploring. The entire evening was a masterclass in turning emotional chaos into compelling art. In just one night, Meg reminded us of art's ability to disturb, challenge, and ultimately, resonate deeply. I loved it very much."
